Improving the quality of education in Karnataka: what does it mean?

In an interesting move to improve the quality of education in Karnataka, the government plans to...
take a five-year average of the SSLC results and compare it with the district average set by the SSLC Board. If the results don't match, then a two-year period is given. If performance does not improve, then grants to the schools will be cut.
While such measures are required in order to raise the bar on schools, they don't suffice. The first thing to remember is that most schools in Karnataka are in the Kannada medium. Improving the quality of education in Karnataka is improving the quality of education in Kannada medium schools.

To improve the quality of education in Kannada medium schools, the quality of Kannada school textbooks has to be improved. For starters, it's high time we stopped translating those textbooks from English to Kannada (and doing a crappy job at that, too). Secondly, teachers have to be given performance-based salary increases/decreases in order to differentiate the wheat from the chaff. These bare minimum things need to be done in order to positively impact the quality of education in Karnataka.

Talking like this is very simple. In these times of everyone wanting to become engineers and docs, I really dont see lot many people taking up primary schoool teacher jobs. The payscale needs to increase so that they can get interested and also teach well.

"performance - based salary increase" -- this rule needs to be brought at any cost. Some of the school teachers miss use the liberty given to them by government.

English medium schools must be allowed.

Learning Science and Maths in Kannada has no value. Govt never thought about higher studies in Science and Economics in Kannada.

So if u have enough money, join ur kids to English medium and opting Kannada as the first language

as they do in software companies give 50%salary as incentive& link it up with the performance of students.Of course there is aneed to increase salary so that bright brains take up teaching.

To start with,is there any state within India where the quality of education in the native language of the land is better. If Yes, we really need to identify the various paramaters of comparison and atleast attempt to incorporate the same in our state.

To reach the status of Israel/Japan/Germany in an environment like ours we atleast need a road map for Education atleast the next 50 years. To start with focus should be on coming up with a revolutionary cost effective teaching model/curriculum that removes redundancies/reduces time and eventually produces great results as well ( the fact that it indeed produces great results should reach out to a large audience in the most dramatic fashion).

I beg to differ with the marginal /incremental approach of modifying existing text books by tinkering around a bit and the like. If really we want a dramatic improvement as is Scientifically proven, the approach should also be dramatic whose results can seriously question the existing set up with all the hype.
